Dear Mrs. Boutilier:
My capstone idea is to give back to my community by helping people who need it the most. My capstone is to set up events for homeless people. I will be setting up a Christmas dinner at St. Elizabeth house on 118 Main St. My second event is have a Haircuts for the Homeless day at Tito Star Barber Shop on 468 Franklin Avenue around November 18th. No days are set in stone but I have already spoke to the barbershop and they said they would host the day when the barbershop is closed. In my senior class many are trying to work with the homeless so I am planning to collaborate Jalen Garrett who will be hosting a sock drive. While I host the dinner he will be hosting a sock drive and we will be hosting a joint clothing drive. This way when the homeless come to eat and there is clothing to choose from.
My research question is:”What are the leading factors of homelessness? I decided to use this as my research question because through working with these people I am hoping to understand why most of these people are in this position in life. In order to show that I have done all my hours and proof that i have done this project, my artifacts will include pictures of the dinner and the haircuts, the fliers for the haircuts and dinners that I will be handing out to homeless shelters along.
For this project my mentor is going to be Elissa Ford and her husband Edward Ford at the Lighthouse Tabernacle Church. They would be great mentors to this project because they are already involved in outreach programs with homeless and incarcerated people. My learning stretch is going to be stepping out of my comfort zone by asking for help with this project and seeking guidance in my mentor who I don't know very well.
